Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day
Today, April 22, 2020, marks 50 years of Earth Day.
Fifty years ago, 20 million people marched on the streets to demand that government protect the health of our people, sparking the passage in the U.S. of the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Earth Day 1970 remains the largest civic engagement event in human history.
Earth Day 2020 is being marked by two crises: One is the COVID-19 pandemic. The other is our climate. We can, will, and must solve both challenges. The world was not prepared for the novel coronavirus, but we still have time to prepare – in every part of the world – for the climate crisis.
While Earth Day is digital, the goal remains the same: to mobilize the world to take the most meaningful actions possible to change the world.
By becoming a General Benefit Corporation, we made a commitment to measuring our impact in four key segments - one being Our Environment.
Additionally, we built our Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) platform based on our focus on PEOPLE. PROPERTY. PLANET.
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day, Nova is proud to announce that we've partnered with One Tree Planted.
Our Partnership
One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to global reforestation. Their mission is to reforest the planet, one tree at a time. Every $1 donated helps plant 1 tree. It's that simple. They also raise awareness about the importance of trees, offer businesses like ours a simple sustainability solution, and motivate younger generations to do something positive for the environment.
Why trees? Trees clean our air and water, create habitats for biodiversity, contribute to our health and wellbeing, and create jobs for social impact. Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines. We’re honored to have reforestation through One Tree Planted as an integral part of our Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) strategy.
United States Forest Service
By partnering with One Tree Planted, Nova has committed to supporting reforestation projects in our national forests. The United States Forest Service (USFS) manages more than 150 national forests across 43 states. One Tree Planted is one of the USFS official reforestation partners, which now gives us the opportunity to plant more trees on more public land from coast to coast!
Nova Commitment
Our trees will be planted in an area in which the USFS needs it most. Trees will be planted in May and we will receive photos of the planting area with a report in July. Along with Nova's corporate commitment to planting trees, we are matching the contributions of any employee that wants to participate. Everyone that participates will receive a personalized certificate to be recognized for their contribution and we will provide updates that track the progress and the impacts that our reforestation project is having on the environment.
Employee Involvement
At Nova, we encourage and support our team members to get involved in local community efforts and Earth Day activities, however, the current situation has limited such participation.
By partnering with One Tree Planted, we embrace the opportunity to provide our employees with a way to make a difference from the comfort of their homes and match each of our employee's contributions.
Earth day marks 50 years of action for our planet. We may be separated, but remember, we are all in this together, and we’re all on this planet together!
